We’ve got you covered on what happened at the meeting.

  1. APSA spoke about the challenges of the past year and our relationship with the University.
Chairperson and president Ben Boyle spoke about the difficult year the members have had regarding the layoffs in May and the current challenges in the post-secondary environment. He also highlighted the wins the APSA currently had including renegotiating the Basic Agreement, reactivating the Joint University Association Committee, the conversations with the board and the Summer Social with at 156 members attending. Read his full report in the Annual Report below.

  2. Our finances are stable, and there was an increase in legal fees due to a labour dispute with SFUFA.
Jasper Stoodley, APSA treasurer, spoke about APSA’s expenses and budget. Legal spending was in relation to a dispute with the Faculty Association regarding membership certification and joining SFUFA.
Salary line items went up as well. The treasurer noted that APSA staff are compensated in line with SFU APSA employees, so when retro-pay is received, and salary is increased, the same goes for the APSA staff.
APSA's revenue comes from two sources: membership dues and investment interest. Both numbers were higher than in previous years. Members received retro payments this year and the general increase in salaries resulted in this increase, but that may change in the next year. Interests improved due to the increased interest rates.

  7. We took a motion from the floor
    Resolution submitted by Erik Tryggvason
Whereas, the Association is disadvantaged in comparison to those other certified trade unions at SFU by its lack of certification as a trade union; and ,
Whereas, SFU has taken the position that SFU has a management right to terminate APSA members without cause, and termination without cause not being an identified circumstances in the AD 10 policies; therefore
Be it resolved that the Board investigate and present to the membership the necessary actions and requirements for the Association to seek certification as a trade union under the Labour Relations Code (RSBC 1996) at a Special General Meeting to be held on or before July 1, 2025.
