APSA Probation Period Policy

After careful
deliberation, the Joint University/Association Committee has finalized the new
Probation Policy (tentatively AD10.22).

The Committee discusses and resolves matters
involving changes to the AD 10 Employment Policies.

The
purpose of the probationary period is to give the supervisor adequate time to
assess the new employee's performance and suitability in the position.

The policy provides
for a six-month probationary period, with the option of
extension at the discretion of the supervisor or upon the request of the employee
in cases of Unsatisfactory Performance.

The policy will be
applied to new continuing employees and temporary employees who move into
continuing positions (unless waived by the supervisory), effective immediately,
as stated in their employment letters.

During
the six-month period, the supervisor is required to provide the new employee
with bimonthly performance reviews in order to inform the new employee how they
are performing in the position.  This
feedback provides an opportunity for the new employee to be aware of the
expectations of the position, how they are performing in the position and the
opportunity to correct any deficiencies, as necessary.

It is
anticipated that the overwhelming majority of new employees will have little
difficulty successfully completing the probationary period. In the small number
of cases where a new employee proves unsuitable for a role, the policy enables
that employee’s termination based on a failed probation. In these cases, the
employee will be given notice or pay in lieu of notice as provided by the
Employment Standards Act.

Please carefully read
through the Probation Policy below.
