Each month, our Advocacy Committee answers your questions about the AD 10 policies (aka, your terms and conditions of employment.)
Hello. I'm Mike Peragine, chair of APSA's Advocacy Committee. I'm answering your question about the workload issues on behalf of the committee.

Is APSA aware of the realignment efforts and the alignment of different functional areas, such as Finance and Administrative roles? While I understand that the alignment work is not expected to result in job losses, but rather a better distribution of responsibilities and functions, I am concerned that this may lead to an increased workload for already overloaded staff. Is this permitted? I would appreciate your clarification on this matter.
APSA has heard of general reorganizations, but not for specific roles. The University has strong management rights when managing the workplace, but it's not without its limitations. The University must comply with the AD 10 policies, Basic Agreement, and other applicable labour laws. APSA has also been meeting with SFU Senior Administration to report workload issues for administrative and professional staff. [APSA President Ben Boyle has noted in this month's message].
If you feel your workload has overwhelmingly increased, please know that APSA is here to support you. We can advise you on your specific circumstances. The policy that you can refer to for taking on extra work outside your workload can be found in AD 10.06 Position Evaluation and Salary Administration under Temporary Overload Pay:
6.02 Temporary Overload
a. The duration of the Temporary Overload assignment must be for a minimum of one (1) week (36 consecutive hours).
b. The amount to be paid as determined by the supervisor who requires the Temporary Overload should be discussed in advance with the Executive Director, Human Resources.
You can always contact APSA to discuss your situation. Talking to APSA is 100% confidential.
