Dear fellow APSA colleagues,
As Vancouver LGBTQ+ Pride was celebrated this past week, I've been reflecting on what pride means to me, not only as a gay man, but also as a member of the University community and APSA.
For me, pride is rooted in integrity. When I think about what makes me proud of myself, I come back to values such as trust, respect, honesty, fairness, and responsibility. These values shape how I approach my work, how I build relationships, and how I strive to support those around me. They remind me that our greatest impact is often found in the everyday moments. The way I treat other colleagues speaks volumes more about me than my sexual orientation or other aspects of diversity.
These same values are at the heart of APSA. As professional staff, we contribute in countless ways to the success of our University. We bring expertise, dedication, and compassion to our work, helping to create an environment where teaching, learning, research, service, and administration can thrive. While our roles may differ, we share a common commitment to fostering a workplace where everyone has the opportunity to belong, succeed, and be treated with dignity and respect.
APSA has long recognized that strong organizations are built on inclusive communities. By championing equity, diversity, inclusion, and accessibility, advocating for our members, and supporting respectful and collaborative workplaces, we strengthen not only our Association but also the University as a whole.
Pride reminds us that inclusion is not a moment or a single celebration. It is an ongoing commitment to ensuring that every member of our community feels seen, respected, and empowered to bring their authentic selves to work. It challenges us to continue building workplaces where differences are valued, and diverse perspectives are welcomed.
As we move beyond Pride season, I hope we continue to reflect on the role each of us plays in shaping our community and organizational culture. By leading with integrity, treating one another with respect, and supporting an inclusive culture where everyone belongs, we honour not only the spirit of Pride but also the values that define APSA and strengthen our University.
That is something I am proud to be part of, and something worth carrying with us throughout the year.
