Why volunteer for APSA?

Volunteers are an essential part of the operation and culture of APSA. Every volunteer makes a difference to APSA members from all of SFU’s campuses. We would love for you to be one of them. Please have a look below for the volunteer opportunities, time commitment for each opportunity and details below. You could improve the workplace and work lives of over 1700 people.

Volunteer positions open for APSA members:

Finance Committee     

The APSA Finance Committee is responsible for overseeing the financial affairs of the Association. The committee, chaired by the Treasurer, works closely with the Executive Director and financial advisors as deemed appropriate by the Board of Directors. The committee is comprised of two to four APSA members and the Executive Director.

The committee is looking for members with a financial background who can advise the Executive Director and Treasurer on financial documents pertaining to the APSA financial review for the Annual General Meeting and other relevant financial matters to APSA.

Pension Advisory Committee

The Pension Advisory Committee (PAC) develops recommendations to change APSA’s pension plan text and its administration, as required. They also provide pension information to the Executive Committee and develop educational material for members about their plan.

The PAC is looking for APSA members who are representative of our membership. We want both new and long-term APSA members. People early in their careers and those closer to the end. If you have pension education, that would be a bonus.

Time Commitment
The PAC usually meets once a month for approximately 2 hours. This will increase if there are pension negotiations.

Advocacy Committee

This committee assists and advises APSA members on their rights and entitlements (according to the AD 10 Policies) and work-related problems. The committee provides representation as observers and advisors in disputes with the University, educates APSA members about SFU policies, deals with grievances and consults with legal counsel when necessary.

Time Commitment
The committee meets twice a month. There is, however, a more significant time commitment due to advocacy training, grievance meetings and other activities.

Please note that this particular committee deals with highly sensitive and confidential issues.
