Congratulations to your new Board Members for 2024

Three members were nominated for APSA’s Board of Directors for a three-year term, and one member has been nominated for a one-year term. The board positions have been determined by acclamation.

Patrick McClarty
Project Manager — UniForum@SFU

Dear APSA Members,

I am a long-time CPA, finance MBA, and designated project manager with public sector experience in health and education, and call Coquitlam my home with my spouse and two kids. I joined SFU in 2020, and currently manage the UNIFORUM@SFU program.

I have previous board-level experience working as a treasurer for the Nunavut Food Bank and the Wideman Education Foundation. I also have experience with collective bargaining agreement negotiations from my work for the Financial Management Board at the Government of Nunavut and as the chair of a health and safety committee at BCIT. I currently serve as a reservist in the Canadian Armed Forces with the Royal Westminster Regiment.

If elected to the APSA Board, I will work to address a few key issues:

  1. Protecting Work-Life Balance and Mental Health: Supporting policies that promote well being and flexible working arrangements.
  2. Equitable job evaluations: Ensuring that every member is compensated fairly for their skills and contributions.
  3. Workplace safety and inclusive policies: Ensuring that safety policies are in place, that employees feel secure, and that APSA continues to advocate for diversity, equity, and inclusion at all levels.

If elected, I will advocate for equitable salaries, improved work-life balance, and workplace safety while ensuring APSA members' voices are heard and valued.

Cheers,

Patrick McClarty

Tess Williams
System Consultant — Dean's Office, Faculty of Arts and Social Sciences

Hi all,

I'm Tess Williams, a Systems Consultant with the Dean's Office in the Faculty of Arts and Social Sciences.

I'm also a community leader for queer folk at SFU, being both a founder and admin of the SFU Trans Equity mail list and a Co-lead for EDI's Community of Practice Trans Equity POD.  This fall, my faculty is recognizing my work with a "Changemaker" award, and you might peruse an article from Sofia Ortega in Criminology if you'd like to learn more about my journey: https://www.sfu.ca/criminology/community/news/202…

When I was on the board previously (2023), I fought tirelessly for the gender marginalized regardless of employee group affiliation. I also bargained directly against the University for our Salary and Benefits committee, securing a great deal for our members and paving the way for Gender Affirming Care to be added for all employee groups.

I aim to bring a calm, composed, and diverse approach to our board issues.  I take great pride in the fiduciary obligation to all APSA employees.

I'm also looking to rejoin the S&B committee again when it spins up in preparation for bargaining next year.

Thank you for your time.

Tess Williams (she/her/hers)

Ellen Siew Meng Yap
Manager, Academic and Administrative Services — School of International Studies

I have worked for SFU for over 18 years, and this past year has been one of the most difficult ones for APSA members. Many of them are working excessive hours and whose duties have increased tremendously without proper compensation.

I am interested in joining APSA's board of directors to help advocate for better working conditions for our members. My role requires I be versed in TSSU, CUPE, APSA, and SFUFA collective agreements, so I have deep knowledge of broad labour issues across the university. I have demonstrated my commitment to APSA members through my membership in the Salary and Benefits Committee (2019-2023) and as a bargaining committee member in 2021 and 2023.

Ts’msyen

It has been a privilege to witness the strength and persistence of our APSA members over the last year, and it has been an honour to represent you. I want to continue to advocate for and amplify the contributions that our members give every day to the SFU community.

I have been at SFU since 2007, holding temporary and permanent positions across all SFU campuses. I am a strong Ts'msyen woman, mother, grandmother, and APSA member who has brought an Indigenous lens to the work and negotiations that I have been a part of on behalf of APSA. I want to continue building a stronger relationship with SFU that exemplifies our members' leadership, wisdom, understanding, and commitment to SFU students and community.

Thank you,
Nicole Manson
