A huge thank you to Allyson Biro, who’s served as APSA’s Trustee for the last four years. As she is leaving SFU this year, we are looking for a new Pension Trustee.

What does the APSA Trustee do?
The members own the Administrative/Union Staff Pension Plan through a Trust Agreement. The Trustee’s role is to administer the operations and funds of the Pension Plan according to this Trust Agreement and the Plan Text. The APSA Trustee sits on the Board of Trustees. They meet once a month to address administrative issues, monitor investments, and approve and review the investment mix. Within this investment mix, they hire fund managers who have specific expertise.

A full valuation of the pension plan is performed every three years; the Board must also select and approve “assumptions” for demographics and earnings, which are used to set the contribution rate.

The role of pension trustee is strictly administrative, as negotiating over the plan takes place elsewhere.

Preferred experience
Interested members should be comfortable with mathematics and general accounting and have exposure to complex documents.

Term
Completion of this current term is on November 30, 2027. As a fair amount of training is involved, the candidate should expect to serve the entire term when considering the role.

To apply
Email Andrew Boden at aboden@apsacentral.ca to express your interest by January 23, 2026.

Who else sits on the Board of Trustees?
The Board of Trustees is made up of a representative from each of the employee groups (APSA, CUPE, and Poly Party) and three people nominated by the University. This combination maintains a balance in discussions and decisions.
