Professional Development for APSA members

Please find below a list of some of the professional development resources that are available to you. Please note that this is not an exhaustive list, and while we try to keep this list up-to-date, please confirm the details with the program manager as they are subject to change without notice.

APSA Events and Workshops

APSA offers day-long, half-day, as well as lunchtime sessions on a variety of topics to support members’ workplace development and provide opportunities for members to network with APSA colleagues. Areas of focus include career skills, management and leadership skills and life skills. These workshops are open to APSA members only, and there are no fees to attend the sessions. Professional Development Funding

There are several professional development opportunities for continuing APSA Employees at SFU.

Tuition Reimbursement

Tuition Reimbursement Application

This policy provides tuition reimbursement for off-campus, job-related credit courses, up to $1000 per year (credit courses not offered at SFU).

Professional Development Expense Fillable Form

Balance: To find the balance in your Professional Development account, go to my.sfu.ca, login, and under Staff Resources, click on "Professional Development Expenses."

This policy reimburses Professional development expenses such as professional dues, computer hardware and software, conference fees. It is important to note that:
 

  1. Only Continuing APSA Employees are eligible for this benefit.
  2. You must use your purchase must for professional development to be claimed.
  3. The annual allocation is $700, total cumulative to $3500.

Tuition Waiver

Tuition Waiver Application

Tuition for SFU credit courses is free for Continuing APSA Employees and their dependents.

Professional Development Leaves

Policy AD10.9

SFU may grant Continuing APSA Employees who have completed six years of service, Professional Development Leaves of up to twelve months.

Staff Internationalization Fund

Through SFU International:

Supports ongoing international engagement of the university community by providing funds for staff projects aimed at deepening SFU's international partnerships and growing SFU's international activities.

Canadian Association of University Business Officers (CAUBO)

SFU is a member, so all staff are considered members. They have an annual conference as well as ongoing Professional Development, including our annual conferenceonline coursesworkshops, and webinars. We also produce a Guide to Communications in a University Context, available online in its entirety.
